Madison Square Garden, mostly called by its acronym “MSG” or just “The Garden” is an indoor arena serving multiple purposes. It is situated on top of Pennsylvania, between 7th and 8th Avenues from 31st to 33rd streets, Midtown Manhattan of New York City. MSG serves a lot of purposes, one of which is its use for professional basketball. It is also used for other used for other sports like boxing, ice hockey, professional wrestling, it is also used for entertainment purposes like concerts, circuses, ice shows and other forms of entertainment. It serves as abode for New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL), the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the popular vocalist Billy Joel.
The Garden was opened on February 11, 1968, and it Is the oldest known major sporting facility in New York. In its use as a sporting arena, it is the oldest known arena in National Hockey League and the second oldest arena in the National Basketball Association. In terms of the sales of tickets, Madison Square Garden is the fourth busiest arena for music trailing the Manchester arena in the UK, the SSE Hydro and 02 Arena. Madison Square Garden was obtained its spot in the latest ranking as one if the 10 most expensive stadium venues in the world having a total construction cost of approximately $1.1 million. It is also a part of the Pennsylvania Plaza office and their retail complex. Every other operating entity in the vicinity of Madison Square Garden bears its name.
Two venues known as Madison sq. Garden were simply just northeast of the square, the primary from 1879 to 1890, and at second from 1890 to 1925. The first Garden was chartered to P. T. Barnum, and as at then, it had no roof and was inconvenient to use throughout the inclement weather, thus it had to been dismantled after eleven years. Madison Square Garden II was designed by a respected architect, Stanford White. The new building was designed by a syndicate including J. P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, P. T. Barnum, Darius Mills, James Stillman and W. W. Astor.
A third Madison Square Garden opened at a new location, on 8th Avenue between forty ninth and fiftieth Streets, between 1925 to 1968. Groundbreaking on the third Madison sq. Garden transpired on January 9, 1925. Designed by the noted theater creator Thomas W. Lamb, it was then built at a value of $4.75 million in 249 days by boxing promoter Tex Rickard; the theater was dubbed "The House That Tex Built." The theater was two hundred feet (61 m) by 375 feet (114 m), with seating on 3 levels, and a most capability of 18,496 spectators for boxing. Demolition commenced in 1968 after the launch of this present Garden. It finished up in early 1969, and also the website is currently wherever One Worldwide Plaza is found.
A number of notable artists had performed at the Madison Square Garden. Madonna, performed there a sum of 31 concerts, the first two being during her 1985 Virgin Tour, on June 10 and 11, and the most recent being the two-night stay during her Rebel Heart Tour on September 16 and 17, 2015.
